A short film about my grandfather

Back in December of 2007, I worked on a short film titled "Portrait of a Guru", about my grandfather, Vidwan A. Narayana Iyer. It's a 9 minute long retrospective with my father, my aunt, Dr. N. Rajam, and all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren talking about our memories of thaatha.

Just imagine, training three generations of musicians from the ages of four or five. He envisioned and implemented a teaching schedule for each one of us, based on our talents and personalities. He deserved an award just for that.

If you don't see a video player, visit this page.

This film was the result of the work of a number of people including my cousins Sangeetha Shankar and Kala Ramnath. It aired at the Parampara function which was held in Chennai.

The background music in the very beginning of the video is a rare recording of Narayana Iyer thaatha playing raaga khamas. It was discovered by my cousin Sangeetha while researching her doctoral thesis.
